Many thanks to Dr. Rooney (http://www.aspenmeadowvet.com/) for sharing his time and expertise.
I have a field bred English Cocker that required three vet procedures to remove spear grass for her ear canal. Twice ear drums were punctured. This was in spite of me being particularly diligent in checking her ears every 15/20 minutes while hunting and trying to hunt only in ares where spear grass wasn ‘t evident!! She doesn’t have much hain in front of ear canal which I would hpope would “catch” the seeds before they migrated into ear canal. is anybody aware of a product I could buy that she could wwear while hunting to reduce risk pf further problems?
Ray, I have no personal experience with this product, but perhaps it will meet your needs: http://www.outfoxfieldguard.com
Blace Lab, male, 7 yr old. Working dog in Hunt Tests mostly in the Southeast US, but has traveled as far north as Maryland. First surgery removed a large fiberous capsule. Three weeks later another abscess, but larger. During the second surgery a seed was recovered and identified as from the subfamily of grasses, the Paniceae. Hopefully, we’re over this now.
Update: Since last post all has gone well. Thanks to Dr Kevin Drygas (now in Tallahassee) for getting the seed out.
